Can You Replace Just the Glass in a uPVC Window?

A cracked or misted pane in a uPVC window usually leads people to the same worried question: do I need a whole new window? The good news, in the vast majority of cases, is no. If the frame is sound, you can replace just the glass — saving you hundreds of pounds per window and keeping your home intact.

When Glass-Only Replacement Works

The sealed unit — the two panes of glass with the insulating gap between them — is a replaceable component in its own right, independent of the frame. Glass-only replacement is the right solution when:

  • A pane has cracked or shattered — from impact, thermal stress, or a slammed door
  • The unit has gone misty — condensation between the panes means the perimeter seal has failed
  • The glass looks cloudy or smeared — a late-stage seal failure that can't be cleaned
  • You want to upgrade the glass — modern low-E units are far more efficient than units fitted 15–20 years ago

If your frames open, close and lock smoothly, and there's no visible damage to the uPVC itself, glass-only replacement is almost always possible. [INTERNAL_LINK: glass repair service]

When the Whole Window Is the Better Answer

Occasionally, replacement really is the better route — usually when the frame, not the glass, is the problem:

  • The frame is cracked, warped, or bowed
  • The window won't close or lock properly even after adjustment
  • There's water ingress or damp around the frame
  • The units are an obsolete shape that modern glass can't match economically

A genuine glazier will tell you honestly which situation you're in — that's the difference between a glazing specialist and a window salesperson with a replacement quota. [INTERNAL_LINK: replacement windows and doors]

How the Process Works

As a mobile service, we handle everything at your home across Maidenhead, Marlow, Henley, Ascot, Slough and the wider Berkshire area:

  • 1. Measure-up visit — we come to you and measure the exact unit, including glass thickness, spacer depth and frame bead profile
  • 2. Unit made to order — your new sealed unit is manufactured with low-E glass, warm-edge spacer bars and argon gas, to current building regulations
  • 3. Fit and finish — we return, swap the old unit for the new one, and clean up completely. Most standard units arrive within days, not weeks

What It Costs

A standard-sized sealed unit replacement typically costs a fraction of a whole new window. Because you keep the frame, there's no decorating, no making good, and no disruption to the room. If several units have failed, we're always happy to quote the batch in one visit — which usually brings the per-window cost down further.
